From the founder

Every business I work with is building something: a watch assembled by hand, an edition pulled from stone, a machine that keeps a production line moving, a book that changes how we understand the mind.

This issue is a portfolio of those clients, the organizations Strat & Company has been fortunate to work alongside. Each feature is about them and what makes their work remarkable. My contribution is noted briefly at the end of each story.

Built in Colorado

4

Vortic Watch Co.Fort Collins, Colorado

The Fort Collins watchmakers behind Vortic set out to build a modern American watch, so they started a new company to do it.

Vortic made its name as one of the only wristwatch manufacturers in the United States, restoring antique American pocket watches and rebuilding them by hand into one-of-a-kind wristwatches. Then the team took on a new challenge: a modern watch inspired by their home state.

Colorado Watch Company paired automatic movements assembled in the USA with cases built in Vortic's Fort Collins workshop. Their pitch was not just "Made in USA" but "Built in Colorado." The line launched through a successful crowdfunding campaign and a signature factory tour that opened the workshop doors to the public. Today, Vortic continues its core craft, and its annual Veterans Day Military Edition remains its most sought-after release.

Fifty years on stone

6

Milestone Graphics Fine PrintsNew Haven, Connecticut

Connecticut's oldest working print shop is still pulling editions by hand.

For fifty years, Milestone Graphics has been a home for artists who want to work in traditional print media. Founded in 1976, the studio now makes its home in New Haven, where it's the oldest professional print shop still operating in Connecticut. Master printer Irene Michnicki collaborates closely with each artist on limited editions in stone and plate lithography, intaglio, relief, and monotype.

The studio also teaches, opening its presses to newcomers through workshops. It now sells prints directly, which brings those editions to collectors well beyond New Haven.
